BMHS Construction Update - December 9, 2016

The last eleven days have seen a tremendous amount of work on the high school site, and today marks the completion of the enabling phase of the project.  The access road has gone in, trees have been cleared, and the majority of the site has been fenced off, providing a jump start on the ability to do the official groundbreaking of the project this coming spring.

Activity on the site will now go quiet until that time as we work to finish construction documents and get all of the subcontractors on board.  In the meantime, here are some pictures from this morning that show much has been done in such a short period of time!

BMHS Construction Update - December 5, 2016

It's the first snowy morning of the 2016-17 school year, so it was a great morning to go out and walk the high school site and see the latest progress that was made over the weekend.  Work occurred on Saturday with tree-cutting equipment being brought onsite, and the results are dramatic:

Shawmut is currently placing posts to put up the construction fence around the perimeter of the project site, starting closest to the ice rink; they are also doing cleanup work from tree removal activities.

BMHS Announces Recipients of Adams Scholarship

Congratulations to this year's recipients of the John and Abigail Adams Scholarship - we are pleased to once again have the maximum number of students possible eligible for the scholarship towards tuition at state institutions of higher education!

Information about the scholarship can be found on the Department of Elementary and Secondary Education's website here, and scholarship awards are based upon students' performance on their Grade 10 MCAS exams.

BMHS Construction Update - December 1, 2016

What a difference 48 hours can make!  I went over to the high school site this afternoon to visit the enabling work that is happening with the construction entrance for the high school and was impressed to see how much work has happened since my last visit on Tuesday.  Here's what it looked like Tuesday morning from the (now former) bench on the first-base line of the baseball field:

And here's a similar view from this afternoon:

Although you can't quite get the view of what's been done from this angle - you can get a better view from the sidewalk across the street at the Parker School:

Or from the sidewalk on the high school side of River Street itself:

Doing all of this work now in the fall - prior to the ground freezing - puts us in a much better position with our schedule when full construction starts in spring 2017!

From Lowell Sun: International Spy Museum to Feature Work of Former Billerica Student

One of the things I will do with this blog is to gather news stories about some of the great things that not only our current students are doing, but our alumni as well.  So, in that vain, this is a great story about Sarah Nault, BMHS Class of 2014.

Site Enabling Construction Beginning for New BMHS

This morning, the Billerica Memorial High School project has reached an exciting new phase with site enabling work beginning in the field behind the existing high school.  Silt fences were being placed around the western edge of the site this morning, and tree clearing for the path for the construction road entrance off of River Street is scheduled to begin tomorrow.

The picture below was taken this morning from the parking lot near the entrance to BEAM behind the high school:

Full construction will not begin until the spring, but this early work will allow the construction team to get a faster start once the weather allows.  We'll continue to monitor progress and share pictures with everyone along the way.

Welcome to the New Superintendent's Blog

This has been long overdue, but I'm excited to be starting this blog to share what is happening in the Billerica Public Schools!  This site will talk about upcoming events, highlight student achievements, and provide my quick thoughts about news that impact the system.

I hope you enjoy the site, and I welcome your feedback to!
